press release: nexus brewery’s 10th year anniversary

Valid for Nexus Brewery and Restaurant on July 10th and 11th, only Pan American Fwy location

Nexus Brewery is celebrating its 10th year in business on July 10th and 11th of this year. Our real birthday is May 23rd, 2011, however, due to Covid, we decided to delay it until July. Thank goodness that the Covid restrictions lifted and now we can have a little party.

Ken Carson founded Nexus Brewery in 2011 with the intent to differentiate it from other Albuquerque breweries starting at the time. Carson wanted his place to be a community-orientated brewery where people could come and have great beer, some samplings of tasty soul food, and conversation. The movie: ‘Star Trek: Generations (1994) is what inspired the name Nexus.  In one of the scenes, Captain Kirk and Captain Picard met in the Nexus.  The meaning of Nexus in the movie was a place where everything is right, a place where there are no worries or concerns, a place where you feel comfortable all of the time. The meaning of the word Nexus is a connection, which matched the desire to be a community organization that invited the community with open arms.

Over time, the Nexus menu has evolved. Nexus calls its food New Mexican Soul Food because the Carson family has been in NM since 1930 and he wanted to mix the cuisines from their Southern roots with New Mexican cuisine. “There was no way we would have a menu without some Red or Green Chile. ”Along with Red and Green options, we added an item Ken had never even tasted. Fried Chicken and Waffles. “When we did Fried Chicken at first, it was just your typical fried chicken that frankly my Great Grandmother taught me to make when I was 6 years old standing on a box. I remember my Mom getting really mad at my great-grandmother for letting me cook standing on a box. But the recipe for our fried chicken is very unique. Along with our kitchen team, we decided to brine the chicken. At first, it was a simple salt brine. We now brine our chicken with several seasonings to include rosemary, garlic, onion, milk, sugar, and more. The taste of our fried chicken cannot be found anywhere and we have been recognized as having the best-fried chicken in NM and even in the southwest.” However, Nexus did not stop there, with input from their customers and team members, they added new items to a menu that was originally meant to be just appetizers, and then one day, Ken realized that “we are a restaurant and a brewery!” Added to the menu were items like gumbo, red beans and rice, desserts like cobbler, and so on. In 2019, as Nexus Brewery and Restaurant’s theme of New Mexican Soul Food continues to evolve, Ken opened Nexus Blue Smokehouse, located in the South Broadway area, with an emphasis on blending traditional BBQ with New Mexican style BBQ and smoked meats.

Nexus gained national attention several years ago when the brewery was featured on ‘Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ with Guy Fieri. Guys visit moved Nexus from a brewery with really good food to a restaurant with great beer and food. This fall, Nexus will once again appear on the national television station Food Paradise. “Food Paradise will feature our NM Soul Burger, I am so proud to be featured again on National TV.  And what is best of all, we have never solicited either of these shows to be featured, they found us through word of mouth!”

Along with the great food, Nexus has won several awards for its Beer. Winning Gold and Silver medals in the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival each for its Imperial Cream and Honey Chamomile Wheat. Other favorites on the menu include Nexus’ Scotch Ale, Cream Ale, and Bird of Prey. For fun, many seasonal beers are named after the Star Trek theme.

This year, we will be featuring BBQ from the Nexus Blue Smokehouse along with its regular menu including fried chicken and waffles, along with two fantastical new beers, the Beam Me Up (Higher), Scotty Scotch Ale which is a big beer with an ABV of 11.25% and Warp Bubble IPA brewed with Cryo Pop Hops to achieve all the best parts of an IPA without the heavy bitterness.  Along with the BBQ, Fried Chicken and Waffles, and beer; Nexus will be having specials on t-shirts, glassware, and other items in combination with their 10th-year Anniversary Celebration. DJs will be spinning tunes all day Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th. We look forward to having a fun day with our Nexus Neighbors and Friends!
